Canada's Top Accounting Firms in Ontario

As mentioned earlier, The Bottom Line publishes a report about the Accounting industry and Canada's Top 30 Accounting Firms. So I checked all the 30 accounting firms and found out the ones that are appropriate for accounting students and recent graduates. 

1. The Big Four Accounting Firms 
No doubt, the big four accounting firms, including Deloitte & Touche LLP, PriceWaterhouseCoopers LLP, KPMG LLP and Ernst & Young LLP, have always been the first choice for candidates. All of them have branches in Ontario. So please pay attention to their job openings. For some of the job postings, they only want to recruit candidates who are pursueing a CA designation.

2. Grand Thornton LLP, BDO Canada LLP, MNP LLP
Also, these three firms have many branches in Ontario.

3. Collins Barrow National Co-operative-have branches in Ontario

4. RSM Richter-have branches in Ontario

5. Mallette
The head office of Mallette in the Quebec city, and it doesn't have branches in Ontario.

Audit Co-op (Scotiabank)







CO OP Audit Student

WORK TERM: 4 months, Spring Co-op Placement (September 2013 - December 2013)
LOCATION: Downtown Toronto

DEPARTMENT DESCRIPTION:
The Scotiabank Audit Department provides enterprise-wide independent assurance over the design and operation the Scotiabank Group's controls and operational processes and provides advisory services designed to improve the Group's operations. Together with the Security & Investigation unit, the Department is staffed with over 480 seasoned professionals in Canada and at several international locations.

The Co-op Student will work with the Audit group to which he/she is assigned, as part of a team, on specific audits and projects to evaluate and repot on the design and operating effectiveness of key controls.

KEY ACCOUNTABILITIES FOR THIS ROLE INCLUDE:
· Plan audits by obtaining intelligence and information relating to the units/processes to be audited
· Execute (and if necessary, develop) detailed audit steps to evaluate the design and operating effectiveness of key controls
· Validate exceptions and findings identified in executing the detailed audit steps
· Document work papers and reporting to management
· Assist in other duties as assigned

QUALIFICATIONS:
· Strong accounting and/or business focus or background with a desire to peruse an accounting designation.
· Good working knowledge of Microsoft applications such as Word, Excel, Access databases.
· The successful candidate will have the ability to apply his/her understanding of accounting standards and principles.
· Possess good judgmental and time management skills.
· Fluency in English is essential
· Strong verbal communication skills.

DESIRABLE CRITERIA:
· Working knowledge of Spanish is an asset but NOT required.
· An interest in developing technical skills may prove helpful but would not be considered a "must."
· Database technologies knowledge is an asset.
· Some knowledge of networking and communications is an asset.
· Electronic (Web) publishing of reports is an asset.

Job Description

BDO Canada LLP requires an outgoing, experienced individual, who will be responsible for office administration, reception and bookkeeping responsibilities in our Cobourg office.

Responsibilities will include (but not be limited to):

  • Receive incoming calls
  • Receive and direct clients and visitors;
  • Book appointments and greet clients;
  • Manage incoming and outgoing couriers/mail;
  • Assist accounting staff with client tasks;
  • Preparation of bookkeeping records and year end accounting file preparation;
  • Maintenance of client filing;

Competencies will include (but not be limited to):
  • Previous administrative, reception and bookkeeping experience;
  • Advanced MS Word/Excel skills;
  • Experience with CaseView software would be an asset;
  • Must be able to deal with confidential matters appropriately;
  • Ability to work under pressure and manage multiple requirements of the role;
  • Ability to be flexible and adaptable to multiple requirements,

Qualifications and Experience:

  • Minimum of 1 year experience (may include co-op experience) with a public accounting firm.
  • University degree or College Diploma in accounting or business with an accounting major.
  • Pursuing or have obtained a professional designation (CA, CMA or CGA).
  • Strong accounting and auditing skills acquired through a minimum of one year of experience in a Public Accounting Practice.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
  • Able to prioritize with the flexibility to manage workload demands and multiple tasks and deadlines as required.
  • Good working knowledge of computer skills, including MS Office (Excel, Word).
